Jan Peter Derrez

Baptised at Schinnen on 26 July 1767, out of the hamlet of Nagelbeek, the sixth of the ten children of Henri Derrez and Anna Maria Latinne, a Walloon couple who had married at Vottem near Liege and come north into Dutch Limburg. The entry calls him Joannes Petrus Derrez ex Nagelbeck, lawful son of Henri Derrez of Vottem and Anna Maria Latenne.

He married first Maria Elisabeth Daniels, of Wolfhagen in the same parish, and buried at least one child of that marriage, a girl of fourteen months, in March 1790. His mother had died the previous November and his father remarried that May.

Widowed, he moved to Munstergeleen and married again on 13 November 1815, at forty-eight, to Maria Ida Tummers, a widow of twenty-seven with a small daughter. He was set down as a dagloner, a day labourer, and his own father, seventeen years dead by then, was entered with no trade against his name. Three children of the second marriage are recorded, the last of them Jan Antoon in 1832.

He died at Munstergeleen on 11 February 1835, and his death act names his parents as Hendrik Derrez and Maria Lateim, the surname by then worn down almost past recognition. That act says he was born at Munstergeleen; his marriage record twenty years earlier says Schinnen, and the Schinnen baptism register settles it in the marriage record's favour. He left a three-year-old boy who would live to ninety-two and be buried in Arkansas.
