Henrietta A. Simons

Henrietta A. Simons was born about 1810 in Dutchess County and brought to Bethel, in Sullivan County, about 1825, when she was fifteen. She married Prosper P. Davis, who had come to Bethel himself about 1835 from Orange County, and they had ten children between 1834 and 1853.

Three censuses hold her, and they do not agree on her name or her age. In 1850 the enumerator put her down as Harriet, aged 48, in a Bethel household of nine children, and she had named her fourth daughter Harriet after herself. In 1855 the state census has her, her husband and six of their children living in Henry Simmons's household, in a log house valued at sixty dollars. In 1860 she is Henrietta, aged 48, with only Amanda left at home, and the enumerator marked her in the column kept for persons over twenty who could not read and write.

By 1870 another woman keeps Prosper's house at Bethel, so Henrietta died in the ten years after September 1860, somewhere between fifty and sixty. Nothing marks where.
