Henry Simmons
Henry Simmons was born in Dutchess County about 1789 and moved his family north-west to Bethel, in Sullivan County, about 1825. The 1830 census finds him there with a wife of his own age and eight children, and he was still farming the same ground twenty-five years later, worth eight hundred dollars in real estate by 1850.
By 1855 the house had filled up again from the other direction. He was sixty-six, Hannah sixty-four, their grown son Isaac still at home, and Henrietta Davis, probably their daughter, was living there with her husband Prosper and six of their children, eleven people in a log house the enumerator valued at sixty dollars.
He was gone within five years. In September 1860 the Davises are keeping their own house at Bethel and Henry, Hannah and Isaac are not in it. Where he is buried is not known, and no record of his estate survives: the Sullivan County Surrogate's Office burned in 1909.
