Henry Dearborn Hadlock

1813-1883 · New Hampshire
Born 1813, New Hampshire
Died 1883
Children include Calista

Henry Dearborn Hadlock was born in New Hampshire on 31 August 1813. His gravestone gives his age at death as 69 years, 9 months and 21 days, which agrees with that date.

He married Dorothy Ann Chase, a New Hampshire woman a year younger, who went by Ann. The wedding was on 16 November 1837 at Jay, a hill town in Orleans County on the Canadian border of northern Vermont. The family moved west in stages. A daughter was born in Vermont about 1840, and the younger children in New York from about 1843. By 1860 they were in the village of Markesan, Green Lake County, Wisconsin. The census found Henery Hadlock, 45, born New Hampshire; Ann, 45, born New Hampshire; and the children, the eldest 20 and born in Vermont, then Karry, 17, Ortha, 12, Emma, 10, Calistia, 7, and George, 5, all born in New York.

In 1871 the Hadlocks moved on to the new railroad town of Russell, Kansas. Calista married the Civil War veteran Clement Aimes there in 1875; her obituary called her "the youngest of four daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hadlock." Henry died on 20 June 1883 and was buried in Russell City Cemetery. His small rounded stone reads: "Henry D. Hadlock. Died June 20, 1883. Aged 69 ys. 9 ms. 21 ds." with a line beneath ending "but not forgotten." A photograph of Henry and Ann survives, taken in middle age: she seated in a dark dress with a bow at the throat, he in a vest and checked tie.
