A shearman, of Colchester and formerly of Dedham in Essex. In the autumn of 1574 he walked to court to give evidence in the suit of Seckford against Forth, and on 11 October he deposed that he was "of the aige of 62 yeres or there abouts" and that "he hath Dwelt in Dedham by the space of xl yeres." That fixes his birth in 1511 or 1512, establishes that he was not born at Dedham, and puts him there from about 1534, probably settling as a wool merchant as soon as he came out of his apprenticeship.

He married first Agnes, probably a Butter of Dedham, who was buried at Dedham on 14 October 1580; second, on 5 June 1581 at Dedham, Marion Willson, widow of Edmund Willson, by whom he had no issue; and third a Margery, also without issue. In 1561 the rolls of the manor court of Fates and Wades in Dedham and Lawford show him holding land, and in 1575 he was one of the original governors of the Dedham grammar school named in William Littlebury's trust and incorporated by letters patent of Queen Elizabeth, sitting alongside his own son.

His will, dated 20 January 1589/90 and proved on 25 July 1590 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, asks to be buried in the parish church of Dedham, leaves six pounds to Doctor Chapman the preacher of Dedham and forty shillings to Mr Parker, and sets up a poor stock for the town that was meant never to run out.
