Henry Sherman

Born about 1547, of Dedham in Essex, and a clothier by trade like his father before him. He is Henry Sherman the younger in 1575, beside his father, and was later called "the elder" of Dedham. On 14 June 1568 he married Susan Lawrance at Moze in Essex, and the parish register there enters it as "Henry Shereman & Susan Lawrence were Maryed y 14 of Junij 1568." He was buried at Dedham on 28 August 1610, a week after making his will.

He was one of the original governors of the Dedham grammar school. In 1575 William Littlebury left two messuages to feoffees in trust so that a schoolhouse might be used for teaching and a schoolmaster paid, and named the governors and their heirs to succeed them forever: Henry Sherman the elder and Henry Sherman the younger, with Edmond Sherman his brother, William Butter and Piers Butter his son, and John Wood and Richard Wood. Queen Elizabeth incorporated them by letters patent the same year.

His will, dated 21 August 1610 and proved on 8 September, was entered in the Consistory Court of London and survives in full. It opens with a Protestant preamble of the kind Essex clothier families were writing at the height of the Dedham lectureship, gives his soul to God "who infused it into my mortall and corrupt body," and then turns to the house.
