Henry Thomas Loggins
Henry Thomas Loggins, called Tom, was born on 9 December 1842 at Pilot Mountain in Surry County, North Carolina, the eldest son of James Henry Loggins and Susannah P. Wall. He was eighteen when the war came. He served as a private in Company H of the 21st Regiment of North Carolina Troops, a regiment raised in the Surry and Stokes County country in 1861 that fought in the Shenandoah Valley under Stonewall Jackson, at Gettysburg and in the Valley again in 1864.
On 6 November 1864, while the war was still on, he married Lucy Ann Wall in Surry County on a bond of the county court. Their children were Mary Caroline, born 1868, James Ambrose in 1870, Joseph Henry in 1872, Julia Hall in 1875 and Penelope, called Nellie, in 1883. Julia was born at Lexington, Kentucky, so the family had gone west by the middle 1870s; they were back in Forsyth County while she was still a child and settled near Tobaccoville. He died in Forsyth County on 20 December 1907, eleven days past his sixty-fifth birthday, and was buried at Macedonia Baptist Church under a white government stone with the Southern Cross of Honor, cut "Pvt Henry T Loggins, Co H, 21 Regt NC Trps, CSA." Lucy outlived him by twenty-four years.
