Julia Hall Loggins was born on 27 July 1875 at Lexington, Kentucky, the daughter of Henry Thomas Loggins, a Confederate veteran from Pilot Mountain, and Lucy Ann Wall. Her parents were both Surry County, North Carolina, people who had married there in 1864, and their stay in Kentucky was short: she "moved to Forsyth County as a child," her obituary said, "and has lived in Forsyth and Stokes Counties since." Her father and mother settled near Tobaccoville and are buried at Macedonia Baptist Church.
On 4 November 1893, at eighteen, she married William Lee Stilley, a farmer two years older. Thirteen children were born to her between 1895 and 1920, eight of them living when the twelfth, Odell, arrived in May 1917. Every census from 1920 to 1940 found her keeping house on the farm, in Stokes County and then in Vienna and Clemmonsville Townships of Forsyth. She was a member of the Baptist church.
She died at eight in the morning on 10 November 1959, at home at 5030 Baux Mountain Road, aged eighty-four, though the obituary made her eighty-five. Three ministers, Lewis Flynn, Preston Grubbs and Dewey E. Bovender, conducted the funeral at Macedonia Baptist Church on the Thursday, after the body had lain at the home of her daughter Mrs. Ray Shipley a few doors away. She left her husband, four daughters, two sons, thirty-four grandchildren, forty-five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
