Henry Tuthill
Henry Tuthill was baptised at St Mary's church in Tharston, Norfolk, on 28 June 1612. He was the third son of Henry and Alice Tuthill of Tharston. His father died in March 1619, when he was six. His brothers were John and William, and his sisters Alice and Elizabeth. His grandfather is believed to have been John Tuthill of Saxlingham Nethergate in the same county.
He married Bridget in England, and they went to Hingham in Massachusetts. In 1635 he had a planting lot at Broad Cove there, and in 1637 a house lot. A Hingham account says that he and his wife came from Norfolk and settled in the town in 1637. Their son John was born on 16 July 1635.
He was made a freeman of the colony in March 1638. A freeman was a church member admitted to vote and hold office. In 1640 he was constable of Hingham, the town officer who kept the peace and served its warrants.
On 20 June 1644 he sold his lot at Hingham and moved to Southold on Long Island. His elder brother John had been one of the earliest settlers there and in 1642 had been made its first constable.
His children were John and Elizabeth, and probably Nathaniel. Elizabeth married William Johnson of Centre Island, near Oyster Bay, by 1660.
He died before 1654. His widow married William Wells of Southold, and she was dead by 1654. The children became the wards of their stepfather. About 1656 his son John spoke of "the estate of Henry Tuthill, his late father, deceased."
