Henry Vanover
Henry Vanover was the father of John P. Vanover, who was born in North Carolina about 1813 and later farmed in Grayson and Wise Counties, Virginia. When John married for the second time, in Dickenson County, Virginia, on 14 December 1889, at the age of 76, the clerk entered his parents as Henry Vanover and Lovely Vanover.
John's daughter Nelly was born in Ashe County, North Carolina, about 1836, and a Henry Vanover headed a household in Ashe County at the censuses of 1820 and 1830. In 1850 the census taker there found Henry Vanover, 57, born in North Carolina, with a second wife, Jane, 55, and three Austins, Polly, 25, Calvin, 20, and Nancy, 18. A compiled family history quoted on his memorial says that Henry Vanover of Cranberry Creek in Ashe County was a Baptist minister, that his first wife's name was not learned and that he married second Jane Austin, and it names John P. Vanover, who married Nancy Vance in 1889, as one of his sons. The 1889 marriage gives the first wife's name: Lovely.
His memorial gives his birth as 27 November 1792 and his death as 13 March 1875, in the part of Ashe County that became Alleghany County in 1859, and his burial in the Vanover Cemetery there. The same family history names his parents as Cornelius Vanover and Abigail Easterd; no record of his own time has been found that names them.
