John P. Vanover was born in North Carolina about 1813, the son of Henry and Lovely Vanover. He married Catherine Taylor, called Katie, a woman about his own age, and their eldest children were born in the 1830s. One of them, Nelly, was born in Ashe County, North Carolina, about 1836. Ashe is the far northwest corner of that state, where it meets Grayson County, Virginia, and the Vanovers lived on both sides of that line.

In 1850 the census taker in Grayson County, Virginia, wrote down John Vanover, 37, born in North Carolina, and Catharine, 38, with their children Polly, 18, Nelly, 13, William T., 9, Lacy J., 8, Jackson, 6, John R., 2, and Martha Ann, a baby. A young woman named Phebe Cooper, 24, lived with them.

By 1857 the family had moved more than a hundred miles west, to the new county of Wise, in the coal and timber country on the Kentucky line. On 17 May 1857 Nelly married Casander Johnson there, and the clerk entered her father as John P. Vanover. The census of 1860 found John P., 47, and Catharine, 47, in Wise County with William T., 19, Stacia J., 17, Daniel, 14, John R., 12, Martha A., 10, Nancy J., 8, and Henry F., 6. In 1870 they were in Walker district of Wise County, the part that later became Dickenson County. John was 56 and Catherine 56, and Daniel G., Martha, Nancy J. and Henry F. were still at home.

Their daughter Martha married Robert L. Mitchell in Wise County on Christmas Day 1872, and on 15 June 1876 their son John R. married Sarah Jane Gibson there. Both registers name the couple's parents as John P. and Catherine Vanover.

Catherine died before 1889. On 14 December 1889, in the new county of Dickenson, John P. Vanover married Nancy Vance. He was 76 and she was 67, the daughter of Carver and Betsey Vance. The register names his own parents, Henry and Lovely Vanover. When and where John died is not known.

Martha died at Pikeville, Kentucky, in 1930, and Henry in Kentucky in 1925. Both death records give their mother's maiden name as Taylor.
