Henry Waterhouse was born on 25 January 1745, by his gravestone. He was a son of Joshua Waterhouse, a fuller from Yorkshire, and Elizabeth Ingham. His father had worked in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and in 1746 bought land in Kingwood Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, so Henry was born in one place or the other. He grew up in the house his parents built that year on what is now the Kingwood-Locktown Road.

About 1766 he married Elizabeth Green, born in 1747, a daughter of Richard Green of Amwell. The two fathers knew each other well. Joshua Waterhouse and Richard Green had served together as witness and appraiser on Kingwood estates in 1754 and 1760.

His father died in 1772. The will, made on 29 September, gave "Son, Henry, 100 acres of said plantation" and named him one of the executors. Two of his brothers, Ambrose and Jonas, had 100 acres each from the same farm.

Henry and Elizabeth had six children who grew up. Charles, born in 1767, went to Princeton, became a physician, and died in Fauquier County, Virginia, in 1793. John, born in 1772, became a Philadelphia merchant and died in 1851. Joshua was also a Philadelphia merchant and died at Rosemont, in Kingwood. Richard Green, born in 1775, went to Tennessee as a surveyor and land speculator and kept a diary from 1804 to 1814 that survives. Margaret, born in 1778, married Abraham Stryker and followed him to the Pennsylvania frontier. Elizabeth, born in 1782, married Hart Johnson.

The children wrote to each other. On 4 January 1802 John told Richard that "Our sister Margaret has been married about three years to Abraham Stryker. They reside in Sussex Warren County NJ and have one child, a daughter about two years old." In 1806 Richard went to see her in Wayne County. He "Crossed several creeks to Abram Stryker's, eldest sister Margaret's husband, in Wayne County ... Back Woods Country," he wrote on 29 November.

When Richard Green of Amwell died without a will in 1794, Henry was made administrator of his father-in-law's estate on 26 September. An administrator was the person the court appointed to gather an intestate's goods, pay the debts and divide what was left. The inventory came to £1,217.13.5.

Elizabeth died on 15 May 1806. Four months later, on 15 September, Henry made his will. "1806, Sept. 15. Waterhouse, Henry, of Kingwood Twsp., Hunterdon Co.; will of. Real and personal estate to be sold. Eldest son, John, $600 and a mullatto lad named Bob. Youngest son, Richard, $300. Negro slaves, Frank and Joseph, to be manumitted and set free when 39 years old. Residue to be divided between my 2 sons, John and Richard, and my 2 daughters, Margaret (wife of Abraham Stryker) and Elizabeth (wife of Hart Johnson). Executors, son, John Waterhouse and son-in-law, Hart Johnson. Witnesses, James Warford, Ingham Waterhouse, Jonas Waterhouse. Proved Nov. 19, 1808. Inventory $2,397.74."

He died at Kingwood on 8 October 1808, "in the 63rd year of his age," by his stone. The Columbian Centinel of 5 November 1808 printed his death: "d. in Kingwood, N.J., aged 63." He is buried in the Rosemont Cemetery at Kingwood, beside Elizabeth.
