Hercules Huey came out of County Antrim, in the north of Ireland, to the Waxhaws on the South Carolina side of the Catawba, where Scots and Ulster Presbyterians were settling in the 1760s. A family history compiled in the 1960s makes him a son of James Huey and Margaret Ellis. His son James was born in Antrim, about thirteen miles west of Belfast, in May 1759, and his son Hercules was born there in 1766. By November 1772 he was in South Carolina, where 200 acres were surveyed for him in Craven County, so the family crossed between those years.

He married Catherine, a widow Adams, who brought two children, Abraham and Margaret Adams, into the house. They had at least six of their own: Alexander, John, James, Hercules, Mary and Elizabeth. The eldest, Alexander, was still in Ireland when his father died.

On 26 September 1775, on his plantation on Cane Creek, he made his will. He was weak of body. He left everything to his wife and the six children share and share alike, except a cow to his stepchildren. He told the family to stay together on the place until the children came of age. If his son came over from Ireland, whatever money or goods of the family's he brought with him were to be handed over, or he got nothing. He died that month, aged fifty, and was buried in the Old Waxhaw churchyard. His son Hercules later put up the stone over him and his wife.
