Hester Amelia Van Wart was born in New York about 1885. On 23 November 1904, in Brooklyn, she married Victor G. Pauly. They lived first in Brooklyn, where their son Victor George was born in 1909, and in 1920 the census found them there with seven children: Alice, Edith, Emma, Charles, William, Everett and Victor. During the 1920s the family moved out to Lynbrook, on the south shore of Long Island.

In 1930 the census found Hester, 45, and Victor, 49, in Lynbrook with six of their children. The eldest at home was Victor Jr., about 20, and the youngest was Grace, 2, born in Lynbrook on 4 August 1928, when Hester was about 43.

In 1947 the Pauly home was on McKinley Avenue in Lynbrook. On Sunday 15 June that year Grace married Robert H. Himes at the Lynbrook Baptist Church, with two of her sisters among her attendants. In April 1950 Hester and Victor were living in East Rockaway with their daughter Edith Fischer.
