Grace Pauly
Grace Pauly was born at Lynbrook, on Long Island, on 4 August 1928. She was the youngest child of Victor G. Pauly and Hester Amelia Van Wart, who had married in Brooklyn in 1904 and were both in their forties when she was born. In 1930 she was two, living in Lynbrook with her parents and her brothers and sisters Victor Jr., Evelyn, Charles, Everett and Edith. In 1940 she was eleven and still in the village.
She graduated from Lynbrook High School and went to work at the National City Bank in Manhattan. In 1947 her parents lived on McKinley Avenue in Lynbrook. Robert H. Himes, whose family lived on Taft Avenue in the same village, had come home from three years in the Army Air Forces, twenty-two months of them in England.
They were married at 3 p.m. on Sunday 15 June 1947 at the Lynbrook Baptist Church. The Rev. George Washburn officiated, and her father gave her away. Her sister Edith Fischer was matron of honor. Another sister, Mrs. Maurice Pearsall of Lakeview, and Marie Palermo of Lynbrook were bridesmaids. Robert's brother Ralph was best man, and her brother Charles Pauly and Frank Kehr of Lynbrook ushered. The reception was held at the Lynbrook Elks clubhouse. In July the Nassau Daily Review-Star printed her bridal portrait under the heading "Wed in Lynbrook."
In April 1950 the census found Robert and Grace in their own household in Lynbrook. Grace was 21, Robert was a clerk in a hardware store, and their son Robert was a year old. Four more children followed: Richard, born at Oceanside in 1953, William, Linda and Carol.
Grace later worked as a computer operator for New York Telephone. About 1991 she and Robert left Long Island for Spring Hill, in Hernando County, Florida. They joined the First United Methodist Church in Hudson. Robert died in November 2009.
Grace M. Himes died on Monday 7 May 2018, at 89. Her funeral was held at Merritt Funeral Home's Spring Hill chapel on 9 May. Her ashes were placed with Robert's in Florida National Cemetery at Bushnell on 21 June 2018. Their shared plaque carries both their names and the words "Together Forever."
