Hester Ann McMahon
Hester Ann McMahon was born on 30 June 1820 in Hempstead County, in the southwest corner of what was then Arkansas Territory, near the Red River. Her memorial names her parents as William Friend McMahon Jr. and Margaret Leona Cox. Her brothers and sisters included William Bruce, Isaac, David, Rev. Friend, Margaret, James and Nancy McMahon.
About 1838 she married James Murph Scott, a Tennessee man. They settled in Newton County, Texas, on the Sabine River border with Louisiana, and their first child, Mary Jane, was born there on 17 February 1839, when Hester was eighteen.
She bore at least eight children who grew up: Mary Jane, 1839; James Benford, 1840; Margarete Caline, 1845; Felix Grundy, 1847; Frances, 1851; Sydney Rice, 1853; Cicely Ann, 1858; and Orinda Hester Ann, 1860, the youngest, who carried her mother's name.
Hester Ann Scott died in Newton County on 20 October 1885, aged 65, and was buried in the Watson Chapel Cemetery at Bleakwood. Her white stone is carved with a lily and reads "In memory of Hester Ann Scott, born June 30, 1820, died Oct. 20, 1885." Her husband was buried beside her a year and a half later.
