Margaret Leona Cox
Margaret Leona Cox was born on 20 August 1781 in Nelson County, Kentucky. She was one of the eleven children of Lt. David Cox and Margaret Bruce, who had come down the Ohio to Cox's Station on Cox's Creek the year before she was born. Her uncle Col. Isaac Cox founded the station, and when he died in 1788 his will left money to three of her brothers.
In January 1798, at sixteen, she married her first cousin William Friend McMahon, a Virginian, the son of her father's sister Ann. He was serving as a militia lieutenant in Nelson County in 1803. Their sons and daughters were born along a long road south and west. Hester Ann was born in Hempstead County, Arkansas, in 1820, and Margaret, the daughter who carried her name, was born in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. The family named its children for its own: a son William Bruce carried her mother's maiden name, and a grandson born in Texas was named Friend Wilson and a granddaughter Margarett Leona.
By 1850 she and her husband, then a Methodist preacher, were living in Newton County, Texas, among their married children. The census that November gives her as 69, born in Kentucky.
She died in Newton County on 24 August 1858, four days after her seventy-seventh birthday, and was buried in the Farrs Chapel Cemetery near Jamestown. Her husband outlived her by four years.
