Holmes I. Stoner
Holmes I. Stoner was born in Pennsylvania on 23 October 1910. He was the son of William Henry Stoner and Lucy Ann Klink, one of at least nine children. In 1920 he was 9 and living in Washington County, in the southwest corner of the state, with his mother and six of his brothers and sisters: Irene, Walter, Hazel, Howard, Alice and the baby Ethel. In 1930 he was 19 and still at home with his mother, Alice and Ethel in North Strabane Township, Washington County.
On 30 November 1935 Holmes, 24, took out a licence in Washington County to marry Pearl Dunfee, who was 17. Because she was under age, her father Calvin Dunfee of 506 Maple Avenue, Washington, signed a consent to the marriage before the clerk of the Orphans' Court that same day. The licence was issued on 3 December 1935.
Within a year the couple had moved to Montgomery County, Maryland. In September 1936 Holmes Stoner of Darnestown was convicted of speeding for the second time in a Washington traffic court and fined $20, and that October his licence was suspended for thirty days for driving at 42 miles an hour. Their daughter Twyla June was born about 1938 and their son Holmes Jr. about 1942.
In February 1944 the Rockville draft board sent Holmes into the Navy. He served from 24 February 1944 to 11 December 1945. After the war he worked as a painter. The census of April 1950 found him at Olney, 38, a painter, with Pearl, Twyla and Holmes Jr. A third daughter, Valorie Kay, was born in late 1953, and there was a fourth child, Holly.
In 1954 Holmes was living at Rockville when his mother died in Pennsylvania. By 1960 the family's address was 17715 Gashell Road, Olney Acres, and that summer Holmes and Pearl announced the marriage of Twyla to Jack Henry Hirrlinger, whose parents lived nearby. In his last years Holmes lived in Pennsylvania. He died on 19 July 1994, aged 83, and was buried at Wildwood Cemetery in Loyalsock Township, Lycoming County.
