Hugh Gaylard was a customary tenant of the manor of Taunton, in Somerset, in the tithing of South Trendle in Pitminster parish. In 1575 the court at Poundisford admitted him to two messuages and two furlongs of bondland, two acres of overland in Smalecrosse and one acre of overland in Lakemead, all in South Trendle and "late of Nicholas Gaylerd." A furlong here was a block of strips in the open fields. He appears in the manor's calendars again in 1574, 1581, 1588, 1592, 1594 and 1596.

His daughter Alice was baptised at Pitminster on 10 May 1594. On 4 October 1608 he surrendered a close called Smalecrest in South Trendle to his son George Gaylard.

He was buried at Pitminster in October 1614. His will was recorded in the Taunton probate court that year, but it has perished. Six months after his burial, on 27 April 1615, his daughter Alice married Richard Trott, a neighbor in the same tithing. Their children later went to Connecticut, where the name became Treat. His wife's name is not known.
