Humphrey Carewe alias Cooke
Humphrey Carewe alias Cooke lived at Westhorpe, in the north of Suffolk, and was born about 1485. He is first seen on 10 March 1522/3, as "Humfrey Carow", a witness to the will of Thomas Carter of Westhorpe.
In the subsidy of 1523/4 he was taxed on his goods at Westhorpe as Humfrey Carew, and he was one of the largest taxpayers in the parish. A subsidy was a tax voted by Parliament and assessed on each man's lands or goods, so the rolls rank a parish by its wealth.
In 1533, as "Humphrey Carewe alias Humphrey Coke", he joined with others to buy a messuage and about sixty acres in Westhorpe, Bacton, Finningham and Wyverstone for 100 marks. A messuage was a dwelling house with its outbuildings and yard. A mark was 13 shillings and 4 pence, so the price was £66 13s 4d.
On 8 May 1540 his son John married the daughter of John Carter at Westhorpe. The register entry names the groom as "John Carrowe, son of Humfrey". In the subsidy of 1545/6 father and son were taxed together for goods at Westhorpe as "Humphrey Coke and John Coke". That is the last time he appears. His wife's name is not known.
A study of the family printed in 1921 gives him six children. They were Robert, probably, born about 1510; John, about 1515; William, about 1518; Thomas, about 1520; a daughter, about 1525; and possibly Alice, about 1527. Robert was of Palgrave and bound his son John apprentice to an Ipswich shoemaker in 1547/8. William was of Cotton, a gentleman with a large estate and a post in the cellar of Queen Elizabeth. Thomas was a servant of Sir Robert Jermyn and was for many years non compos mentis, not of sound mind. The daughter married Nicholas Raynberd of Bacton. Alice married Robert Willett at Westhorpe in 1553.
His own parents are not known. He was perhaps a great-grandson of Thomas Cooke of Cotton, who made his will in 1471.
