John Cooke alias Carewe
John Cooke alias Carewe was born about 1515, a son of Humphrey Carewe alias Cooke of Westhorpe, in the north of Suffolk. His family used the two surnames as one. The tax collectors, the clerks and the courts wrote him as Carrowe, Coke, Cook and Cooke, and sometimes as both names at once.
He married at Westhorpe on 8 May 1540. The parish register reads: "John Carrowe, son of Humfrey, and the daughter of John Carter 8 May." The clerk did not write the bride's given name. She was Alice, and her name appears three years later, when the couple sold land.
That sale was made by a final concord in Easter term 1543. A final concord was a sale of land dressed as a lawsuit and settled in the king's court, and the court kept the bottom copy of the agreement, the foot of the fine. This one names "John Coke alias Carewe and Alice his wife" selling lands in Westhorpe and Walsham to Robert Harte.
In the second payment of the subsidy of 1545/6 he was taxed for goods at Westhorpe with his father, the two of them entered as "Humphrey Coke and John Coke". Twenty years later, in the subsidy of 1565/6, he was taxed there for goods as John Cooke.
Five children were baptised at Westhorpe as the children of John Cook. Katherine came first, on 12 February 1540/1. Joan followed on 22 August 1543 and Mary on 21 January 1546/7. William was baptised on 26 September 1552 and buried on 23 October. John was baptised on 26 January 1553/4 and buried on 13 August 1559, aged five. The three daughters all married at Westhorpe: Joan to Nicholas Preston in 1564, Katherine to John Clarke of Finningham in 1567, and Mary to Robert Poolam in 1569.
He died after the subsidy of 1565/6 and probably before 1576. His son-in-law John Clarke lived mainly at Westhorpe after his death.
His brother William Cooke alias Carewe of Cotton, gentleman, had a large estate in Cotton, Westhorpe, Finningham, Wyverstone and Mendlesham. He held a post in the cellar of Queen Elizabeth and bore arms: sable, on a chevron argent between three demi-lions rampant or, as many cinquefoils. He died in 1572.
