Humphrey Reed lived in Montgomery County, Virginia, in the first decades of the nineteenth century. He was the father of Lucy Reed, born about 1811, and when she married Hiram Reed in the county in January 1828 he signed the marriage bond with the groom. The bond, dated 26 January 1828, calls her "Lucy Reed daughter of said Humphrey Reed of this county". Hiram Reed signed it in his own hand, and a William E. Reed signed as well and affirmed before the clerk that Hiram was of age.

Montgomery County then took in the high country of the New River around Christiansburg and Blacksburg, and the part of it that became Floyd County in 1831. Reeds were thick on the ground there, and more than one of them was called Humphrey. A Humphrey Reed headed a household in the Christiansburg district in 1810. A Humphrey Reed junior, son of a Humphrey Reed senior, married Sally Reed in the county in January 1815, and a Humphrey Reed born about 1804 married Nancy Reed there in March 1825. By 1830 the census taker in the Christiansburg district wrote down three heads of household of the name: Humphrey, Humphrey A. and Humphrey P. Reed. Which of these men was Lucy's father, the marriage record of 1828 does not say.

Lucy named her son Humphrey, born in Pike County, Kentucky, about 1839, after him.

A Humphrey Reed followed the family west. In July 1841 the Pike County Court in Kentucky recorded a road "made by Humphry Reid, George Reed and Hiram Reed" around a neighbor's farm, and the census takers found an Umphrey Reed heading a household in Pike County in 1840 and Humphrey Reed, 71, born in Virginia, there in 1850, with Nancy, 60, Mahala, 21, and Simon P., 17. He was born about 1779, old enough to be Lucy's father, and he was living beside Hiram and Lucy in the years their children were born. He is very probably the same Humphrey Reed. Hiram and Lucy named a daughter Mahala in 1849.
