Lucy Reed

b. 1811 · Virginia
Born 1811, Virginia
Father: Humphrey Reed
Children include Amos

Lucy Reed was born in Virginia about 1811, a Reed before she married one. On 26 January 1828, in Montgomery County, Virginia, she married Hiram Reed, a young man of twenty one. Her father Humphrey Reed went with Hiram to the clerk's office and signed the marriage bond, which calls her "Lucy Reed daughter of said Humphrey Reed of this county". A third Reed, William E., signed with them and swore that the groom was over twenty one. Montgomery County lay along the New River in the Blue Ridge, around the courthouse town of Christiansburg, and in 1830 Hiram was heading his own household there.

Her first children were born in Virginia: George about 1831, Johnathan about 1832 and Hannah about 1834. By about 1837 the family had crossed into Pike County, Kentucky, on the Big Sandy, and the next seven children were born there: Susannah, Humphrey about 1839, named for her father, Amos on 19 May 1840, Miram, Lydia S., Wallis and Mahala. In 1850 the census taker in Pike County wrote her as Lucy Reed, 39, born in Virginia, with Hiram, 45, and ten children at home.

About 1852 the family went back over the line into Virginia. A daughter Lucy was born on 23 February 1854 in Russell County, and the birth was entered with her parents' names, Hiram and Lucy Reed. In 1860 the family was farming in Scott County, in the far southwest corner of the state. The census taker that year wrote the mother of the house as Ruthe Reed, 49, a woman of exactly Lucy's age; whether it is a misreading of her name or a second wife the census does not say.

When her son Humphrey married Philis Sapp in Scott County on 29 August 1867, the register named his parents as Hiram Reed and Lucy Read. Her son Amos had come home two years before from Camp Douglas, the Union prison at Chicago, where he had been held from the fall of Cumberland Gap in 1863 to the end of the war. By 1880 Hiram was a widower. When and where Lucy died is not known.
