Ida Elizabeth Pugh
Ida Elizabeth Pugh was born on 19 January 1872, the daughter of George W. Pugh and his wife Temperance. In June 1880, aged seven, she was at home on her father's farm at Old Texas, in Monroe County, Alabama, with her brother John, 9, and her sisters Joanna, 4, and Martha, a baby born that December. Her father's father had been born in Tennessee and her mother's in North Carolina. The Owens farm, where her future husband was growing up, was on the census taker's route a few pages on.
Her mother died about 1885, when Ida was about thirteen. About 1888, at sixteen, she married Wherry Owens. Their eldest child Lizzie was born in March 1891, followed by Martha Corene, Nora, George Wherry, Phenie Marie, John David and Simon P. By 1900 she had borne five children and lost one.
In June 1900 she was 27, keeping house on the Owens farm at Old Texas for Wherry, their four children and his widowed mother Mary. In 1920 the family was in the Simpkinsville precinct of Monroe County.
Wherry died in January 1927. Ida lived another twenty seven years and died on 8 November 1954, aged 82. She is buried beside him in Jenkins Chapel Cemetery under a marble stone that reads "Ida Elizabeth Owens, Jan. 19, 1872, Nov. 8, 1954, Gone but not forgotten." Her daughter Lizzie, on marrying a second time in 1943, gave her mother's name as Ida Pugh.
