Mary Elizabeth Owens, always called Lizzie, was born in March 1891, on the 7th by later records. She was the eldest child of Wherry Owens and Ida Pugh. In June 1900, aged nine, she was living with them on her father's farm at Old Texas, in Monroe County, Alabama, with her sisters Marthey and Nora, her brother George and her grandmother Mary Owens, a widow of seventy. Her Social Security application gives her birthplace as Pine Apple, the village near Old Texas, and her parents as Wherry Owens and Ida Pugh.
About 1908, at seventeen, she married John A. Godwin, a widower of thirty six with five children. Family accounts say she was only fifteen. Her first child was born on 18 July 1909 at Old Texas, near her parents, and she named him Wherry after her father. In April 1910 she was keeping house for John and his five children in Kings Precinct, Dallas County, with the baby beside her.
Her children were Wherry Dudley in 1909, Clarence Elmore in 1911, Verdelia in 1914, Clinton Leon in 1917, Ida about 1920, James Howard in 1924 and Phyllis Lois in 1928. In January 1920 the family was farming at Walnut Hill, in Escambia County, Florida, where the census taker wrote her name as Lilie B.
By 1930 the marriage was over. In April of that year Lizzie Godwin, 38 and divorced, was head of her own house at Awin, in Wilcox County. She owned the house, valued at $600, and she ran a filling station. Her son Dudley, 20, worked on the roads, and Verdelia, 16, Clinton, 12, Ida, 9, James, 6, and Lois, not yet two, were at home.
On 10 May 1943, at Greenville, she married Leroy Lowe, a son of J. D. Lowe and Dorothy Rayborn. She gave her age as forty seven; she was fifty two, and Leroy was thirty six. The marriage record names her parents as Wherry Owens and Ida Pugh. Leroy died in 1979.
Lizzie Lowe died on 13 August 1983, aged 92, with Greenville as her last home. She was buried in Sunrise Memorial Park, outliving her son Wherry Dudley Godwin by less than a year.
