Ida May Fleming, always called May, was born on 18 April 1880 in what became Dickenson County, Virginia, the daughter of W. J. Fleming and Pat Branham. Her death certificate gives the day as 18 May; her stone gives April. On 4 June 1896, at sixteen, she married John Henry Mullins, a Clintwood man of about nineteen.
By June 1900 she had two sons, Leondis, born in October 1897 and later called Lonnie, and Linsey, and the family lived in Clintwood town. She went on to bear at least five more children: Hillard B., Lenzie, Muncie, Lannie Mae and Mary June. Lonnie married Rachel Virginia Mullins in 1916, and May lived to see his son Hassel born in 1919.
Her brother Pridemore, sheriff of the county, was shot dead in front of the Clintwood courthouse in August 1926. Two years later May died, in Dickenson County on 27 September 1928, aged 48. The Skeetrock correspondent of the Dickenson County Herald wrote of her as "daughter of aunt Patsy and uncle Billy Fleming" and "sister to Pridemore Fleming, the Sheriff who was killed a few years ago. She was a loving mother and a friend to all." She was buried in the Flemingtown Cemetery at Clintwood. Her stone, headed "Our Mother", carries a small porcelain photograph and the words "Her end was peace, forever with the Lord."
