Lonnie Mullins
Lonnie Mullins was born on 14 October 1898 in Dickenson County, Virginia, by his stone; the census of 1900 gives October 1897. He was the eldest son of John Henry Mullins and Ida May Fleming, who had married in 1896. In June 1900 he was Leondis, 3, in their house in Clintwood town, with his baby brother Linsey. His son's death record calls him Leonidis, and the Clintwood paper called him Lonny. On 25 October 1916 at Skeetrock, aged nineteen, he married Rachel Virginia Mullins, seventeen, a Mullins by birth and the daughter of John Preston Mullins and Elizabeth Sanders, and they had a daughter, Reeble Irene, and a son, Hassel, born on 8 December 1919.
The family went to the coal camps at Jenkins, Kentucky, where Rachel died in the summer of 1935 or 1936, aged about 36, and was brought home to the Flemingtown graveyard at Clintwood. Lonnie married again, within the year, Cynthia Westina Crabtree, a woman of about forty-five with a grown son, Paul Newberry, from an earlier marriage. Lonnie was working then as a mining prospector. On Wednesday 15 June 1938, in a car parked beside the highway between Clintwood and Fremont, he shot his wife through the head and then shot himself. He died at once; she died that night in the hospital at Clintwood. A deputy sheriff who came on the scene said that Lonnie had left three notes for his relatives, and gave jealousy as the cause. Separate funerals were held on 17 June. Lonnie was 39, and was buried beside Rachel at Flemingtown under a stone with his photograph set in it, a young man in a hat and tie, and the words "Gone but not forgotten". His son Hassel was killed in the Jenkins mines five years later and laid beside him. Hassel's son Lonnie Wayne Mullins, born in 1940, carried his name to Lorain, Ohio.
In 1920 the young family was in Clintwood, Lonnie 22, Rachel, Hasel and Ruble. The marriage certificates of their daughters Ruble Irene and Inetta and their son Carrol name Lonnie and Rachel as parents.
