Idus G. Vinson
Idus G. Vinson was born on 4 March 1915 in Alabama. His parents, James D. Vinson and Maggie Lyons, were both Alabama born, and by the middle of the century they had crossed into the hill country of northeast Itawamba County, Mississippi.
On 12 March 1939 Idus married Audrey Mae Swindle, an Itawamba County girl of 18, daughter of Millard Fillmore Swindle. Their first son, Charles, was born about 1940, and a daughter, Maggie Pearl, the next year.
Idus spent his working life on the land. On 15 May 1950 the census found him at 34 on a farm he owned in Itawamba County, enumeration district 29-1. He had worked fifty hours the week before. With him were Audrey, 29, their children Charles E., 10, Maggie P., 9, Jimmie L., 6, Neal E., 3, and a baby, Harold G. His widowed aunt, Myrtle C. Rogers, 59, lived in the house. His parents, James D., 77, and Maggie, 70, lived eight houses back along the same road. Two more sons, Gary and Larry, were born later.
The family later lived at Golden, in Tishomingo County, a few miles west of Red Bay, Alabama. Idus belonged to Poplar Springs Baptist Church. He died at his home in Golden on 14 April 1994, aged 79, a retired farmer of fifty years. His funeral was held the next day at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and he was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery near Tremont, Itawamba County. Deaton Funeral Home of Red Bay was in charge.
His obituary listed his wife Audrey; his daughter, Maggie Pearl Elrod; five sons, Charles, Neal, Harold, Gary and Larry, all of Golden; two sisters, Velma Swindle of Ackerman and Ida Hicks of Nashville, Tennessee; thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. His son Jimmy had died before him. Audrey lived another sixteen years and was buried beside him in 2010 under a stone that gives the day they married.
