Ingeborg Cathrine Berg, daughter of Johannes Berg, the bruksfogd or works bailiff at Hafslund in Østfold, and his wife Annichen Strømberg. Hafslund was an ironworks and estate outside Sarpsborg, and her father ran it.

In September 1777 the Rakkestad company came to Hafslundmoen for its regimental exercise, and her family's historian sets her meeting with Captain Gregers Smidt at about that time. She married him and moved to Rakkestad, where he rented the farm Haugsten from the district judge and where all six of their children were born: Karen Johanne in 1784, Friedrich in 1790, Hans Strømberg in 1792, and three more.

Her husband died in 1799 and what she did next is the most concrete thing recorded of her. Etter at Gregers Smidt døde i 1799 kjøpte hun Store Holm i Idd og bodde der: after Gregers Smidt died in 1799 she bought Store Holm in Idd and lived there. Idd is the border parish above Fredrikshald. Her son Friedrich afterwards owned and lived on that place, and it is the estate that made him a proprietair when he married in 1817. She spent her own last years in Fredrikshald.
