Isaac Gonce
Isaac Gonce was born on 26 July 1770. The 1850 census gives his birthplace as Delaware, and a family pedigree chart agrees. As a young man he lived in New Castle County, Delaware. An estate account there shows him holding a lease dated 7 March 1792, at a rent of fifty dollars. The same account records an agreement of 14 March 1792 between Isaac and Abraham Gonce.
He married Frances Wilson, called Frankie. They had eight daughters and two sons.
By 1810 the family was in Hawkins County, East Tennessee. Isaac owned land on the north side of Clinch Mountain, on the head waters of Richardson Creek. In November 1813 he sold a hundred acres there to George Rogers, for $333.33. He sold other land to John Mendenall in 1814. He went to law in the Hawkins circuit court between 1815 and 1819, and one jury found him "not guilty of the Trespass."
In about 1818 he led the whole family south to the Crow Creek valley of Jackson County, Alabama. His widowed daughter Bettie Rogers and her small son George went with them. Many families were moving to North Alabama and southern Tennessee at the time. The state line ran through the settlement, so kin lived on both sides of it. Isaac later took a federal land patent in Alabama.
Frankie belonged to the old Baptist church on Crow Creek. She died in 1842. In 1850 Isaac, at eighty, was living with his daughter's family, the McKinneys. The census taker wrote his name as Isaac Jones.
He died on 4 December 1853. He was buried beside Frankie in the cemetery of the Mount Gilead Primitive Baptist Church at Pleasant Grove, half a mile south of the Tennessee line. Both lie in rectangular stone sarcophagi.
John Mathews, probably his grandson John M. Matthews, administered the estate. At the final settlement on 1 September 1856 the land had brought $400. There was also an $8 note owed by his great-grandson George Rogers. After $51.80 in costs, $356.20 was divided among eight heirs, $44.52 each. Each daughter's share was taken by her husband "in right of his wife."
