Elizabeth Gonce

Elizabeth Gonce, called Bettie, was born on 10 May 1798. She was a daughter of Isaac Gonce and Frances Wilson, one of eight daughters and two sons. The family lived in Hawkins County, East Tennessee, near Clinch Mountain.

She married William Rogers. Their only child, George, was born in October 1815. William had come home sick from the War of 1812 and died in 1816.

In about 1818 her father moved the whole family south to the Crow Creek valley of Jackson County, Alabama. There, on 29 December 1818, she married James B. Matthews. He became a wealthy planter. They had a large family: Frances Ann, John, Isaac Newton, James, Margerite, Sarah, Hardaway, Elizabeth, Mary Ellen and Margaret, per a memorial listing.

She was an old Baptist. Her father died in 1853. When his estate was settled in 1856 she was one of his eight heirs. Her son John Matthews was the administrator.

She died at Cave Spring, Jackson County, on 18 September 1873. She was buried in a Matthews family cemetery there. Her stone reads "Wife of Jas. B. Matthews, Married Dec. 29, 1818".
