Isaac Llewellyn Dilley
Isaac Llewellyn Dilley was born on 18 October 1875 in Page County, Iowa. His obituary gives the year as 1876. His parents were Henry Register Dilley, a farmer from the mountains of West Virginia, and Nancy Jane Cozad, who had married in 1873. Henry settled near Red Oak about 1875 and farmed there for fifty years. In 1885 Isaac was nine and living at Coburg, in Grant Township of Montgomery County.
On 7 June 1899, at Red Oak, he married Alberta Viola Winn, the daughter of John Winn and Ella Crees. She had come to Red Oak from Cedar County with her parents at the age of eight. Their children were Llewellyn, Ralph Marian, Paul Bryan, Ruth Margaret, Helen Esther and Grace. Paul was born in Sherman Township in 1906.
Isaac was a rural mail carrier out of Red Oak for thirty five years. Rural free delivery had begun in the 1890s, and before it a farm family had to go to town for its mail. He retired from the postal service in 1936, and he and Alberta moved to the Nodaway neighborhood. In June 1949 they kept their golden wedding anniversary with a family gathering. Alberta died that November.
Isaac died on Friday, 28 April 1950, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, after a week's illness. He was seventy four. The funeral was in the Methodist church at Nodaway, with Rev. C. M. Rowe officiating, and he was buried in Evergreen Cemetery at Red Oak beside Alberta. He left three sons, L. A. Dilley of Red Oak, Paul of York, Nebraska, and Ralph of Dunlap; three daughters, Mrs. Carl Johnson of Nodaway, Mrs. John Baker of Villisca and Grace at home; and eleven grandchildren.
