Isaac Parfit
Isaac Parfit was born in Upper Canada on 6 May 1828, the date he gave the census taker in 1901. On 8 November 1853 he married Mary Ann Badgley, a daughter of Thomas Badgley and Sarah Grant, in the Victoria District, the old judicial district around Belleville on the Bay of Quinte.
In 1861 Isaac, 32, married and an Episcopal Methodist, was living in Thurlow Township, the township that holds Belleville. His son Ira had been born at Belleville in June 1860.
In April 1881 he was 52 and head of a household in Elzevir Township, in the north of Hastings County, on the rough Canadian Shield country above Belleville. The census taker wrote the family down as Scottish by origin. With him were Mary, 46, and seven younger Parfits: Malicia 26, Cesesia 24, Emley 23, Ira 20, Bertha 18, Edith 17 and Nathan 12. The 1881 census does not state relationships, but the marriage registers of Edith in 1887 and Nathan in 1895 both name Isaac Parfit as their father, and Edith's names her mother as Mary Ann Badgley. Ira later told a Montana registrar that both his parents were born in Canada, which fits Isaac and Mary Ann.
Within five years Ira had gone west to the United States. Isaac stayed in north Hastings. In 1901 he was 72, a Methodist, living with Mary A., 66, and a boy of 16, Charles Parfit. He died in Hastings County on 31 July 1904, aged 77. His widow died at Thurlow in 1909.
