Ira Allen Parfit was born on 22 June 1860 at Belleville, Hastings County, Ontario. In 1881 he was 20 and living with Isaac Parfit, 52, and Mary, 46, in Elzevir Township in the north of the county, with six others of the name: Malicia, Cesesia, Emley, Bertha, Edith and Nathan. The census called the family Scottish.

He went west to the American territories. On 2 July 1888 he was naturalized at Lewis and Clark County, Montana Territory, certificate 195, and in 1889 he registered to vote at Great Falls, Cascade County, aged 29, giving his birthplace as Belleville, Ontario. By 1893 he had moved to North Dakota and married Ethel M., a Wisconsin-born woman who already had a small daughter, Thedth. On 4 April 1902 he filed on land in the state. In June 1900 he was farming in Montpelier Township, Stutsman County, south of Jamestown: Ira, 40, Ethel, 35, his step-daughter Thedh, 6, and his own daughter Mary, 1. That daughter, Mary Ethel, married Gustavus O. Bolkan in 1916 and went to Oregon.

In 1910 he was in Corwin Township, Stutsman County. By 1915 he had moved north to McLean County, where he filed on more land on 12 June 1913, and he stayed there: the state census of 1915 and 1925 and the federal censuses of 1920 and 1930 all place him in McLean County, in Township 149 in 1930. Ethel died in 1923 at Jamestown. Ira died on 24 March 1939 and was buried at Clifton Cemetery in McLean County under a small granite stone cut with two roses: Ira Allen Parfit, 22 Jun 1860, 24 Mar 1939.
