Israel Woodward

Israel Woodward was born at Taunton, Massachusetts, on 30 July 1681. The town entered him as "Israell, ch. John". His parents were John Woodward and Sarah Crossman. Through his father he was a grandson of Nathaniel Woodward of Boston. Through his mother he was a grandson of Robert Crossman of Taunton.

Another Israel Woodward, a son of an older Israel, was born in 1674 and also lived at Taunton. The two men are easily confused.

He served in Queen Anne's War in 1705 and 1706. That war set the English colonies against the French and their Indian allies.

His wife was named Elizabeth. Their children were Abigail, who married David Harvey; Israel; Benajah, who married Abigail Harvey; Dorcas, who married Josiah Harvey; and Zerviah, who married Peter Pitts.

In 1749/50 he sold his rights in the estate of his grandfather Robert Crossman.

He died on 10 December 1766 without a will. His son Benajah was made administrator on 12 January 1767. On 16 November 1767 the court ordered a division of "all the Real and moveable Estate which Israel Woodward late of Taunton deceased died seized of". The division was made in 1770. His widow Elizabeth died at Taunton on 1 October 1768.
