Jacob F. Batchelor

1811-1892
Born 1811
Died 1892
Children include Henry

Jacob F. Batchelor was born on 5 July 1811, by his gravestone. In 1850 he gave his birthplace as New York, and his son's death record in 1912 says the same. A later cemetery record places his birth at Brookfield, Worcester County, Massachusetts. A Semantha Batchelder, 64, born in Massachusetts, was living in his house in 1850, so the family probably had roots in Massachusetts whichever state he was born in.

On 25 October 1843 Jacob married Martha Mason in Wayne County, Michigan, the county of Detroit. Their son Henry Augustus was born in Michigan on 3 September 1844. By 1850 they had settled at Port Huron, where the St. Clair River leaves Lake Huron. The census that year lists Jacob, Martha, Henry, five, and a baby daughter Alice, eleven months old.

Martha died on 12 July 1851, aged twenty eight, leaving Jacob with two small children. Their daughter Alice grew up but died on 23 July 1874, aged twenty five, and was buried in the family lot at Lakeside Cemetery.

Port Huron was a lumber town, and Jacob went into lumber. In 1854 John Howard took his own son Henry and J. F. Batchelor into partnership as John Howard and Company. They built a saw mill on the St. Clair River north of the railroad bridge, which Howard afterwards sold to Batchelor. Jacob retired from the firm a few years later, and it went on as John Howard and Son. In 1867 Jacob F. Batchelor was still running one of the seven saw mills in Port Huron.

Jacob lived another forty years. His son Henry stayed at Port Huron into the 1870s and then moved to Saginaw, and Jacob died at Saginaw on 3 January 1892, aged eighty. He left an estate of about $75,000, and he remembered both of his towns in it. His body was taken back to Port Huron and buried in Block K of Lakeside Cemetery. A large granite family monument there carries the name J. F. BATCHELOR on its base, with his own peaked stone and Martha's in front of it.
