Henry A. Batchelor
Henry Augustus Batchelor was born in Michigan on 3 September 1844. His parents were Jacob F. Batchelor and Martha Mason, who had married in Wayne County the year before. By 1850 the family lived at Port Huron, at the mouth of the St. Clair River. Henry was five that year, with a baby sister, Alice, and an older woman of the family, Semantha Batchelder, 64, born in Massachusetts, in the house.
His mother died on 12 July 1851, aged twenty eight, when Henry was six.
Henry married Agnes Hardie, a daughter of James Hardie and Agnes Dunlop. Their first child, Agnes, was born on 5 October 1867 in Port Huron Township. Henry was still at Port Huron in 1870. That year he held four shares in the new Port Huron Times Company, which published the town's daily paper, and their son Jacob Frederick was born there about 1871, named for Henry's father. Ella Murdock followed in 1872.
By 1879 the family had moved up the Saginaw valley. Henry Augustus Jr. was born at Saginaw on 31 August 1879 and Margaret in 1883. A daughter Alice L. was also born in Michigan. Henry worked in lumber, the trade that built Saginaw. When the People's Savings Bank of Saginaw was chartered on 17 November 1886, with a capital of $50,000, he was one of its original stockholders. It opened in February 1887 in the Bliss Block at Genesee and Washington Streets.
Henry A. Batchelor died at Saginaw on 21 August 1912, a retired lumberman, aged sixty seven. Agnes died two months later. They are buried together at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Saginaw, in a plot marked by a columned monument carved with the names WYLIE and BATCHELOR.
