Born 1786, Pennsylvania

Jacob Need was born in Pennsylvania about 1786 and farmed in Rose Township, Carroll County, Ohio, where the census taker found him on 2 November 1850 with thirteen hundred dollars of land, a wife and twelve children. Every one of the children was born in Ohio, so the family had come west from Pennsylvania before 1822.

He was the son of Jacob Need Sr., who had taken up land on Ten Mile Creek in Washington County, Pennsylvania, in 1785 and was in Morgan Township, Greene County, by 1795. The father moved on to Harrison County, Ohio, by 1818 and in 1820 received a federal patent for a quarter section in Stark County. On Christmas Day 1824 he deeded it to "Jacob Need Junior, son of said Jacob," for "the natural love and affection which he has toward his said son" and $320. The younger Jacob had married Nancy Worley about 1821.

He kept the quarter section fifteen years. On 6 April 1839 "Jacob Need and Nancy his wife of the County of Carroll" sold it to William Davis for $2,200. Carroll County had been formed from parts of its neighbours in 1833, and the farm now lay inside it. On 1 April 1854 he and Nancy sold another 70 acres in Carroll County to William Rose for $1,450.

Some time after that sale he moved the household again, to Jefferson Township in Owen County, Indiana. He is there in August 1860, seventy four years old, still farming, with a thousand dollars in land and four hundred in personal property, and the four youngest daughters still at home. Two of the children date the move between them: Mary R. was born in Ohio in 1849 and Uriah in Indiana in 1855.

He did not go to Indiana at random. His daughter Rebecca had married Levi Criss there in December 1851, and the Owen County federal land entry book lists Jacob Need and Levi Criss as purchasers on the same and facing pages, with John Need and David Criss adjoining. Two families that had been neighbours in Carroll County bought their new ground side by side.

He died on 7 June 1861 in Owen County, aged seventy five, by a compiled family sheet that its maker later struck through. His probate there has not been found.
