Rebecca Need
Rebecca Need was born in Ohio about 1827, the fourth of the twelve children of Jacob Need and his wife Nancy, both of them Pennsylvanians who had come west before she was born. The census of 2 November 1850 finds her at twenty three, still at home in Rose Township, Carroll County, on her father's farm.
A year later she was in Indiana. Her father moved the whole household to Owen County some time between that count and 1855, and on 18 December 1851 the clerk of the Owen Circuit Court issued a licence to Mr. Levi Criss and Miss Rebecca Need. John Long, a justice of the peace, married them on the twenty first, and the certificate was filed on 5 January.
The two families had been neighbours in Ohio and stayed neighbours in Indiana: the Owen County land entry book lists Jacob Need and Levi Criss among the purchasers in Township 10, on the same and facing pages, with John Need and David Criss adjoining. She bore at least eight children over the next twenty years, among them Permelia in the late 1850s, and followed Levi on to Andrew County, Missouri, where the census of 1880 still finds her keeping the household with the youngest of them. She died there on 20 July 1892, aged sixty five, and is buried in the Gravel Wall Cemetery.
