Jacob Peart
Jacob Peart was born in February 1823 at Allendale, the lead-mining dale of south Northumberland, by his memorial. His parents were John Peart and Elizabeth Watson, who had married at St Cuthbert's, Allendale, on 17 January 1818. The 1841 census found him at home at the Forest, High, in Allendale, with his father, his brother John, his sisters Margaret, Hannah and Elizabeth, and a brother named Watson, after their mother.
In 1849 he crossed to America. His memorial says he "emigrated to America in 1849 via the ship 'Guy Mannering' on June 28, 1849 along with other blacklisted miners and their families". That the miners had been blacklisted at home is family tradition; no record of it is known. He settled at Galena, Illinois, the centre of the lead district of the upper Mississippi. His sister Margaret followed in 1850 with her new husband, Robert Wilkinson.
He married Mary Ann Walton, a Weardale girl born in 1839 whose family came to Vinegar Hill, north of Galena, in 1853. Her memorial gives the marriage as 1857, but their first child was born in 1856. They had twelve children: Elizabeth Hannah, later Mrs Bennett, in 1856; Joseph August, 1857; Mary Jane, later Mrs Love, 1860; John, born 1861, who died in 1864; John Watson, born at Galena on 13 April 1867; Sarah Ann, later Mrs Bilse, 1868; Martha Rhoda, 1869; Margaret, later Mrs Jewell, 1871; Nettie, later Mrs Hocking, 1875; Jacob William, 1877; Jonathan, 1879; and Fannie, later Mrs Johnson, given as 1883.
In March 1865, in the last weeks of the Civil War, he enlisted in the 7th Illinois Cavalry at Dixon. The muster roll indexes him under the name Pearl. He served six months and was mustered out at Springfield in September.
He died at home in Wisconsin on Christmas Day 1881, of "an illness of the lungs", by his memorial, and his body was taken by train to Vinegar Hill for burial. His Wisconsin death record names his son John. The family monument at Vinegar Hill reads "JACOB PEART 1839-1881 / MARY HIS WIFE 1839-1928 / JOHN THEIR SON 1861-1864". The 1839 against his name is his wife's birth year, cut twice by mistake. A government marker for his service stands nearby.
