John Peart

1788-1851
Born 1788
Died 1851
Children include Jacob

John Peart was born about 1788 and spent his life in Allendale, the lead-mining dale of south Northumberland. On 17 January 1818 he married Elizabeth Watson at St Cuthbert's, the parish church of Allendale. The marriage is in the parish register.

The 1841 census found the family at the Forest, High, in Allendale township: "John Peart (55), Jacob Peart (15), John Peart (15), Margaret Peart (14), Hannah Peart (10), Watson Peart (8), Elizabeth Peart (5)". That census rounded the ages of everyone over fifteen down to the nearest five, so John's 55 fits a man of fifty-two or fifty-three, and Jacob, born in 1823, appears as fifteen. The son named Watson carried his mother's surname as a given name. A grandson born at Galena in 1867 carried it too, as John Watson Peart.

Three of the children are known to have gone to America. Jacob, the eldest, sailed in 1849 and settled at Galena, Illinois, in the lead district of the upper Mississippi. Margaret married Robert Wilkinson, a Northumberland man, on 24 July 1850, and they went out the same year; the 1878 history of Jo Daviess County records him there. The others named on his memorial are John, who lived until 1902, Hannah, later Mrs Graham, who died in 1911, and Adam, born in 1844, who died in 1926.

John died in March 1851, aged sixty-three, at Swinhope near Allendale, and was buried at St Peter's, Allendale, on 12 March. Family trees give his mother as Margaret Whitfield (1748-1840), which no record cited for it confirms.
