Jacob Wohlford was born in York County, Pennsylvania, on 7 March 1819. He was the son of another Jacob Wohlford and his wife Elizabeth. The county history of 1887, written while Jacob was alive, says the elder Jacob was a Pennsylvanian whose parents had come to that state "in an early day from Germany." The elder Jacob grew up in York County and served as a private in the War of 1812, the war with Britain fought from 1812 to 1815. Late in life he moved to Columbiana County, Ohio, then to Indiana, and died near Goshen. He had eleven children, ten of whom grew up, and the younger Jacob was the seventh.

Jacob spent his youth in York County. At eighteen he began to work for himself as a farm laborer. In 1838 he went west to Columbiana County, Ohio. On 1 January 1841, near Wooster, Ohio, he married Mary S. Kraamer, the daughter of Michael and Susan (Shiley) Kraamer of Pennsylvania. Mary was born in Pennsylvania on 30 October 1825 and was fifteen at the wedding.

The family came on to Indiana and settled in Jackson Township, Huntington County, on the farm where Jacob spent the rest of his life. The history praised it as "a good farm supplied with all the modern appliances of agriculture" and called him "one of the worthy and industrious citizens of Jackson."

Jacob and Mary had nine children: Benjamin F., Thomas J., John M., James A., Mary E., Jacob H., William F., Samuel P. and Harriet. "The three older sons served in the late war," the history says, "and rendered efficient service in defense of the National Union." Benjamin did not come home. He died in the army at Helena, Arkansas, on 4 October 1862. Five weeks later, on 7 November 1862, their daughter Mary Emeline died at home, aged 12 years, 9 months and 25 days. She was buried at Zion, and her stone calls her the daughter of J. and M. S. Wohlford.

Before the war Jacob voted as a Democrat. After it he voted with the Republican party. He and Mary were members of the United Brethren Church, the church that kept the burial ground at Zion in Jackson Township.

Jacob died in 1901 and Mary in 1903. Both are buried at Zion Cemetery.
