Jacobine Hertzer
Jacobine Marie Hertzer was born in Germany in November 1867. Her name is spelled Jakobine on her gravestone and Jacobine in the papers. She married John Hirrlinger, also German-born, and they made their home in Washington, District of Columbia, where their six children were born between 1894 and 1907: Frederick, Dora, Catherine, Henry, John and Lena.
John died at their home in Bladensburg, Maryland, in November 1918, leaving Jacobine a widow at 51 with her two youngest still in school. She went back into the city. By 1925 she was living on M Street northeast, and that December thieves broke into her house and got away with clothing worth $100. Her daughter Lena was married at the M Street house in 1931.
Jacobine died at her home, 2800 M Street northeast, on Tuesday, 4 September 1934, aged 66. Her funeral went from the house to Holy Name Church, where a mass was said for her, and she was buried beside John at Prospect Hill Cemetery.
