1902-1973 · Washington
Born 1902, Washington, District of Columbia
Died 1973
Father: John Hirrlinger
Mother: Jacobine Hertzer

Henry Hirrlinger was born in Washington, District of Columbia, on 11 November 1902. His parents, John Hirrlinger and Jacobine Hertzer, were German immigrants, and he was the fourth of their six children. In June 1916 he finished the eighth grade and was sent on to Central High School. He grew up in the city's northeast and spent most of his working life there as an electrician with a business of his own.

In the 1920s he was part of the German-speaking world of the capital. In 1926 a German-language weekly printed in Washington reported on a local football club whose second team played on the Monument grounds. That February Henry was added to the club's entertainment committee, and the paper said he had promised great things in the way of fun. In April he was elected to the club's committee.

In February 1929 Henry took out a building permit for a two-story frame house at 2216 Quincy Street northeast, on lots 8 and 9 of square 4240. The permit named him as both owner and builder, and the designer was John Louis Hirrlinger. The house was estimated to cost $6,500. It stayed the family home for more than twenty years.

On 18 August 1927 Henry married Evelyn M. Hileman at Niagara Falls, New York, more than three hundred miles from home. In 1930 they were living in Washington with their baby daughter Lorraine Evelyn, and their son Jack was born in June 1933. The Washington Times listed the birth on 21 June 1933 under the plain line "Henry and Evelyn Hirrlinger, boy."

Henry was active in his neighborhood. In January 1936 the Rhode Island Avenue Citizens' Association elected him its financial secretary. A citizens' association in Washington spoke for its streets before the District commissioners, since residents of the capital had no vote and no city council. In January 1941 he was elected president of the men's Brotherhood of his Lutheran church.

The census of 1940 found the family in the Quincy Street house, where they had also lived in 1935: Henry, 37, Evelyn, 31, Lorraine, 11, and Jack, 6. In April 1950 they were still there. Henry, 47, gave his work as proprietor of an electrical repair business, working 48 hours a week in a business of his own. Lorraine was 21 and Jack 16.

The business was Hirrlinger Electric. In 1960 it advertised for an electrician and helper with commercial and industrial experience, at 2263 Channing Street northeast.

By the mid 1950s Henry and Evelyn had moved out to Olney Acres in Montgomery County, Maryland. Their address was Ridge Road there in 1960, when their son married Twyla June Stoner, whose parents lived in the same development. Henry died in July 1973, with his last home at Rockville. He was buried at Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Brentwood, Prince George's County, Maryland, under a bronze marker he shares with Evelyn.
