James A. Coleman
James A. Coleman was born in Pennsylvania about 1882. His father was also born in Pennsylvania and his mother in New Jersey.
He married a young Englishwoman, Nellie, who was about two years younger than he was. Their daughter Veronica L. Coleman was born in Pennsylvania about 1904.
In April 1910 James, 28, was the head of a household in Philadelphia's 13th Ward, in the center of the city north of Market Street. Nellie was 26. Their children were Veronica L., 6, James A. junior, 4, and Howard E., a baby under a year old. Four other people lived in the house: Thomas Fitzgerald, 72, born in Ireland, and three young Pennsylvanians, Anna May, 19, Viola Barder, 18, and Jack Packer, 23. That many unrelated people under one roof usually meant lodgers.
A family account gives his full name as James Augustus Coleman, his wedding to Nellie as 9 July 1903 in Philadelphia, and his death as 1915. Veronica would have been about eleven. Ten years after the census she married Charles B. Laird of Camden, and she gave her first son the middle name Howard, the name of her little brother.
