Veronica Lillian Coleman

Veronica L. Coleman was born in Philadelphia about 1904. A family account gives her full name as Veronica Lillian Coleman and her birth as 29 December 1903. Her father, James A. Coleman, was a Pennsylvania man, and her mother, Nellie, was born in England.

In April 1910 she was six, the eldest child in her parents' house in Philadelphia's 13th Ward. Her brothers James junior, four, and Howard, a baby, were at home, and so were four lodgers. A family account says her father died in 1915, when she was about eleven.

She married Charles B. Laird, a Camden man about five years older than she was. A family account places the wedding on 26 October 1920, in Maryland, when she was sixteen. She was seventeen when her son, Charles Howard Laird, was born on 24 August 1921 at Magnolia, in Camden County, New Jersey, where her husband's parents lived. She gave him the middle name of her little brother Howard. A daughter, June Evelyn Laird, was born in Camden on 31 July 1923.

In 1930 Veronica was 26 and living in the city of Camden with her husband and the two children. In 1940 the family was in the same Camden house, in the 14th Ward, where they had already been in 1935. She was 36.

Her son named her as Veronica L. Coleman when he applied for a Social Security number in 1937, and June did the same in 1940. Her son's marriage record of 1946 at Philadelphia names her as Veronica Coleman. In 1950 Veronica, 46, and Charles lived in Haddon Township, near their son's family. A family account gives her death as 16 July 1986, at Burlington, New Jersey.
