James A. Peck was born on 29 June 1860 in Illinois. He came west to Watonga, the seat of Blaine County in the old Cheyenne and Arapaho country, which the government had opened to settlement in the land run of 1892.

He had been married before. His son Thomas Allen Peck was born on 7 May 1888, and two more sons, Edward J. and Ralph L., were in his household in 1910. In 1901 he married Rose Clara McClain of White County, Illinois, who had been married to a Blakeley and brought her son Eugene Blakeley into the household. Their son Jamie was born at Watonga on 31 May 1907.

In 1910 the family at Watonga was J. A. Peck, Rose C., Thomas A., Edward J., Ralph L. and Jamie Peck, and Eugene Blakeley. Thomas, his eldest son, was killed on the railroad at Watonga on Sunday evening, 4 May 1913, three days short of his twenty-fifth birthday, and was buried there. In 1920 James and Rose were still in Blaine County with Jamie, who went to school at Watonga into the mid-1920s and married there at Christmas 1927.

In 1924 he was selling trees as the local agent of the Neosho Nursery of Neosho, Missouri. In August 1925 Rose's son, E. W. Blakely, came from Kansas City with his wife to visit the family.

James died at Watonga on 6 February 1940, aged 79. He is buried in the Watonga IOOF Cemetery under a grey granite stone that reads FATHER, JAMES A. PECK, 1860, 1940. Rose lies beside him under a matching stone.
