James Allen Smith was born on 18 February 1875. On 7 August 1898 he married Annie McNeely at the home of Thomas McNeely, with A. J. Joiner officiating. The Jefferson County newspaper reported that "the happy couple soon took their departure to Washington Co., where they will make their future home."

They had at least eight children: Lizzie Mae in 1900, Kendrick Marvin in 1902, Lorena in 1904, Sam in 1907, Eunice in 1909, Bertha Louise in 1911, Bennie in 1915 and John Russell in 1918. Annie died in 1918, the year the youngest was born, and was buried at Riddleville.

James then married Leila Price, born in 1887. Their sons were Henry Jordan, born in 1921, and Willie Cohen, born in 1926. In 1965 he was living in Augusta when his son Kendrick died. Leila died in 1961. James A. Smith died at Augusta on 13 November 1968, aged 93, and was buried with Leila at the Josey Baptist Church cemetery in Washington County.
