Kendrick Marvin Smith was born in Washington County, Georgia, on 18 October 1902. He was the son of James Allen Smith and Annie McNeely, who had married in 1898. His mother died in 1918, when he was fifteen, and his father married again.

About 1923 he married Jewell Norene Josey, a planter's daughter from near Bartow. Their first child, Lora Elizabeth, was born in 1924 and Eunice in October 1926. Eunice was named in the year his younger sister Eunice died, aged eighteen.

About 1929 Kendrick took his family across the Savannah River to Bath, South Carolina. Bath was a cotton mill village in the Horse Creek Valley of Aiken County, and he worked in the mill until he retired from United Merchants, the company that owned it. He lived in Bath for thirty-six years and belonged to the Bath Baptist Church. Four sons were born after the move: Floyd in 1932, Kenneth in 1936, Gerald in 1939 and Jimmie in 1942. Gerald died in 1945, aged six.

Kendrick M. Smith died at the Aiken County Hospital on Tuesday, 15 June 1965, after a long illness. He was 62. His father, then ninety, was still living in Augusta. The funeral was held at the Bath Baptist Church with Rev. Sam Shaw and Rev. A. F. Carter officiating, and he was buried in Langley Cemetery. He left his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Stanley Quackenbush of Langley and Mrs. Curtis Carnell of Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, four sons, and fifteen grandchildren.
