Born in North Carolina on 10 March 1799. In the 1850 census he is at the head of a household in Union County, Georgia, in the far top corner of the state, with a wife Elizabeth born about 1809, also of North Carolina, and six children: Livi about 1831, Martha 1833, Nancy 1836, Mary 1842, Elizabeth 1845 and Alvy 1849.

The order of those birthplaces is the whole story of the family. Every child up to and including Elizabeth in 1845 was born in North Carolina. Alvy, born in 1849, was born in Georgia. Whatever moved them, it moved them in the four years between, and it set them down in the mountains at the head of the state.

The deed books of Fannin County carry a James Brookshire three times over thirteen years, and Fannin was carved out of Union in 1854 without anybody in it having to move. In 1857 he mortgaged property to Ebenezer McLeod against a promissory note of seventy dollars with lawful interest. In 1858 he signed and sealed a deed before J. M. Griffith, a justice of the peace, recorded that June by the clerk William Franklin. In February 1870 Isaac A. Pearce made him a deed of land. That is a man holding, borrowing against and buying ground in the county his 1850 household woke up in.

He had married Elizabeth Tilley in Wilkes County, North Carolina, on 21 August 1827, and the 1830 census counts the two of them there with their first son. In 1870 he was in Gilmer County, still farming at seventy one. He was dead by 1880, when Elizabeth was entered as a widow in their youngest son's house, and he lies at Pisgah Church of Christ Cemetery at Ellijay.
